Things to Do Instead of Eating


  1. Go for a walk
  2. Research health, weight loss, and nutrition info on the Internet. Go to the library if you're really hungry, you can't eat in there.
  3. Put on music and dance. Burns calories as well as distracting.
  4. Clean your entire house. Start in one area and move through the house until everything looks perfect.
  5. Research anything you can think of! Finances and investing, political issues, world news, history, philosophy...anything that interests you or that you don't know much about.
  6. Make a list of things you've been meaning to do. Unfinished projects, errands you've been putting off, reorganizing something. Go through it when you want to eat.
  7. Do something creative. Make something (try www.cutoutandkeep.net for inexpensive and easy ideas and tutorials), paint or draw, play music, or some creative writing.
  8. Make your own website! Then tell me so I can add it to my links page!
  9. Make someone a gift, or go shopping for one. A great idea to get out of the house when you don't need anything yourself. You'll make them happy and feel good too, much better than if you ate!
  10. Get ahead on your homework.
  11. Take a class or volunteer somewhere. You'll be doing something productive as well as getting out of the house and filling time. You can also say you ate there when you get home.
  12. Play with your pet.
  13. Do beauty rituals. At home facials, manicure/pedicure, exfoliate your entire body, do a hair treatment. It's very soothing and you'll feel too beautiful and clean to dirty yourself with food.
  14. Learn a musical instrument.
  15. Go through your closet or garage, find old things you don't use or need and take them to Goodwill. Or organize a clothing swap with your friends, trying on clothes will be very motivational!
  16. Keep all your old magazines. When you need a distraction, go through them cut out thinspirational photos and interesting articles.
  17. Go through your photos. Learn scrapbooking or put them in albums. Make a collage.
  18. Take a shower or bath. This is best when you're on the verge of a binge. Take as long as you need to get your mind off food. Looking at yourself naked will remind you that you don't need any food.
  19. Plan out your calorie intake for the next week.
  20. Call family members you don't talk to that often, like your grandparents. Pace while you're on the phone.

Dinner for my family, Desserts for my class, basically I have my friends make requests for what kind of cupcakes they want every Wednesday. Cooking is very soothing, and actually makes me less hungry. Try it!

  2. Another good idea is to write a book - this takes a lot of time and thinking. Worldbuild a very detailed universe, timeline out a thousand years or more of history, plot out several different books in the universe, then start writing them. This will keep you occupied, so that whenever you have free time that you might accidentally eat during you can spend on this. It keeps you from thinking about the food and it's very productive! Once you've finished writing them, edit them very much, nitpick at the word choice and everything. Then maybe you can even publish them, and there's another good thing that will have come!

    Just think, somewhere in Somalia, there is a child who would give her right hand for a loaf of bread...

  9. You should add knitting to this list! I started knitting infinity scarves to avoid eating. 1 hour of knitting burns 31 calories (I know its not too much but at least you're burning some cals). You could also sell them for some extra money!

I have suffered with my e.d. for over three years now and it always gets to me when people go this is so great I want to lose X amount of weight and I'm going to become 'ana' to lose weight. Go ana..   13. Thank you for your tips. My personal tip is that muscle burns more calories than fat - so weight-training helps a lot. If you look at Bodybuilders or Fitness competitors - they manage to reduce fat levels to a minimum without starving. They are very self-disciplined about what they eat and with their training/exercise program - so that satisfies the Anorexic's need to manage anxiety with self-control. Since they eat a lot of protein (ie. protein powder) - they are less likely to binge. 1 Tbsp. of whey protein powder has around 5-8 grams of protein and around 28 calories. Plus they come in different flavors. Chicken (47 calories per ounce) and Tuna is also low calorie and high in protein and satisfies hunger. I like 1/3 cup Oatmeal with two tablespoons of protein powder = 166 calories (very satisfying way to beat hunger and lose weight at the same time).

    1. Yes, walk every day for one hour...fast....
      for breakfast: have 50 g of non sugar cereal with skimmed milk
      for lunch: have a BIG salad (make a nice one with sugar free tinned corn or tuna)
      For dinner: have small amount 4 - 6 ozs of protein (like chicken, fish esp salmon, turkey (can be cold cuts) and steamed vegetables (fill most of the plate with your favourite vegetables).
      YOU WILL LOSE 20 pounds in a month....or 5 weeks....It does not go overnight
      and DRINK your 8 glasses of water

  24. really struggling at the moment, all my housemates cook together and all eat together... but I really don't want to eat, especially dinner, but they keep getting suspicious when I don't and I've put on SO much weight since coming back to college as they're making me eat SO much and I can't escape the routine of cooking and siting down with them for dinner. Really difficult to purge too as they're always in the house when I am.. any tips to try and get out of eating as much without anyone getting suspicious?! I'm getting so depressed with how out of control this is all getting, I need to stay in control of it all again, I really don't want to relapse into my old fat self again!

  25. Hey, Ive been doing great lately, only I find myself scared of the scale! I know I've lost weight, but I can't bring myself to weigh in. If the numbers aren't low enough for me, I will be super disappointed, so I'm afraid I will binge. But my clothes are looser than before. Anyone else have this problem?

No, the scales keep me honest with myself and keep me going; very motivating because every time I get on the scale I see the number is still too high, therefore it reinforces the fact that I do not need or want food! I have to make sure daily, and especially after purging a binge, that the numbers have not gone up, and usually they go down anyway. So it is quite soothing actually. Also, it's like a game in my head, small challenges to see how low I can get and seeing the numbers fall consistently gives me such a high, makes me feel great. So if your clothes are getting looser, you probably weigh less. But I truly do not recommend starving and/or purging, it will wreck your life! believe me, I've been suffering 20 years, almost half my life! please get out and get help when you can!

I spent a long time doubting my looks, even when everyone said I was pretty. I battled depression...I still do. But I found a way to love myself, like everyone else loves me. I eat at restaurants, I enjoy every single meal. I fit into a pretty cute wedding dress. I'm fat. And I'm loving it. Think about that.

No socializing, for pro ana persons have nothing else on their mind (or in head) but food and avoiding the food. One of the proof this is mental illness, not a life style.     1. Saute foods in olive oil. Eat healthy whole foods like corn, potatoes, peas and beans. When you are full, take three more bites. Drink whole fat milk instead of diet or regular soda. Eat greek yogurt with fruit. When you are thirsty, drink milk, soy milk or coconut milk instead of water. Snack on fruits as much as possible. Make lavish meals for your family and make sure you taste as you cook. Putting on weight does not mean eating garbage candy and chips. Eat healthy foods that will nourish your body. Then take another three bite.
